Australian tax residents who have retained pension assets in the UK are often not aware of the significant options available to them to access their benefits earlier and more tax efficiently.

UK regulators have made it more difficult and complex to transfer from a UK Defined Benefit scheme. It is now a UK regulatory requirement for a defined benefit transfer of more than £30,000 that the member obtains advice from a UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) Accredited Adviser, before the trustee of the fund will allow the transfer to proceed.

If you leave your fund in the UK, pensions drawn from UK schemes are taxed at your marginal tax rate. This income will also be included in the test that determines how much Age Pension you receive from Centrelink.

Once transferred, when conditions of release are met you will have tax free access to your entire fund as a lump sum or pension in retirement.
